The west coast of the "Big Island" has a variety of landscapes. South of Kona is quite green for being on the windward side of the island. The Kona airport area is a massive expanse of old lava flows mostly from the northern volcano Mauna Kea. The Kohala Coast north of the Kona airport is mostly destination area resorts. The Kona area has whale watching, deep sea fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and most other activities.
