Pennsylvania was named in honor of Admiral Penn, the father of the better known William Penn, the founder; "sylvania" means "woodland."
Nicknames: Keystone (because of its position among the original thirteen states), Steel, Coal. State Data: Total Area - 45,302 sq. miles; water, 294 sq. miles (excluding Lake Erie) Motto: "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence." State Flower: Mountain laurel. Main Rivers: Delaware, Susquehanna, Allegheny, Monongahela, Ohio, Genesee, Youghilogheny, Schuylkill, Lehigh, and Juniata. Mountain Ranges & Topography: Appalachian Highlands in the west, including South Mts., various plateaus. Some 39 miles of shore on Lake Erie. Delaware River is navigable, making Philadelphia an important port. National forest lands, 740,000 acres. State Forest; 1,651,780 acres. Agriculture: Hay, corn, wheat, oats, buckwheat, rye, barley, potatoes, apples, peaches, and pears. Livestock and dairy farming. U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at State College including also an Institute of Animal Nutrition. U.S. Land-Grant College; School of Agriculture of Pennsylvania State College at State College. Manufacturing includes: Iron and steel products, coke, glass, pottery and other fire-clay products, silk and rayon goods, foundry and machine shop products, electrical machinery and apparatus, printing and publishing, knit goods, railroad construction and repair, refined petroleum, bakery products, meat products, cigars and cigarettes, refined sugar, men's clothing, motor vehicles, leather, worsted goods, paper and wood pulp, cotton textiles, woolen textiles, women's clothing, rugs and carpets. Geology: Minerals: Coal (once especially important), petroleum, natural gas, iron, cement, building stone (limestone, dolomites), slate, kaolin (porcelain clay) and other clay products, glass sand, and feldspar. Leading Cities: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, Reading, Erie, Allentown, Harrisburg (capital), Wilkes-Barre, Johnston, Chester, Altoona, Bethlehem, Lancaster, New Castle, McKeesport, and York.
Climate- Variable, being mild and uniform in the east, more extreme in the west. Average annual temperatures: 53 degrees in the southeast, 47 degrees in the northwest (49 degrees on Lake Erie). Annual rainfall is 44 inches.

Food- Traditional American food in most communities. Chinese food is also prevalent.
Foreign Visitors- Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus. This test does not apply to tourists. Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.
