Ohio took its name from the Iroquois Indian name of the river.

State Flower:  Scarlet Carnation  Main Rivers:  Ohio, Cuyahoga, Black, Vermilion, Huron, Maumee, Sandusky, Great and Little Miami, Scioto, and Muskingum.    Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Glacial plain in the north, rugged hills in the southeast.  Some swamps.  Lake Erie frontage of 230 miles, with Maumee and Sandusky Bays.  Some islands.  Several small lakes, including Grand Reservoir, Indian Lake, and Buckeye Lake.  Agriculture: Corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, oats, potatoes, apples, barley, peaches, pears sugar beets, and various vegetables.  Livestock, poultry, and dairy farming.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Wooster.  U.S. Land-Grant College:  College of Agriculture of Ohio State University at Columbus.   Manufacturing includes:  Rubber tires, foundry and machine shop products, ornamental ironwork and pottery, iron and steel products, motor vehicles, clay products (brick, tile, etc.), electrical machinery and apparatus, meat products, printing and publishing, railroad construction and repair, bakery products, men's clothing, paper and wood pulp, prepared foods (canned fruits and vegetables), refined petroleum, paints, and varnishes, coke, flour and grain products, road building equipment, mining machinery, fire engines, coated fabrics, and boots and shoes. Geology: Minerals: Clay products, coal, natural gas, petroleum, stone, coke, lime, cement, gypsum, salt, grindstones, sand, mineral waters, potash, and pyrite.  Leading Cities: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Columbus (capital), Akron, Dayton, Youngstown, Ashtabula, Canton, Lakewood, Springfield, Hamilton, and Cleveland Heights.

Climate-  Temperate and variable in the north.  Average annual temperature 51 degrees, with extremes from 104 degrees above to 38 degrees below zero.  Annual rainfall 39 inches.  Prevailing westerly winds likely to sudden change.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
