Part of Kauai,  Small Island about 8 miles to the west of Kauai island.  This island can be seen by helicopter from Kauai.

Climate--The Island is arid and the landscape resembles Southwest Texas.

Niihau, “the Forbidden Island, is the last true Hawaiian Island.  Its’ 47,000 acres are privately owned by descendents of the Eliza Sinclair family and is a closed community.  Because it is privately owned, the only option for visiting this Island is through its’ own private helicopter service.  The helicopter was originally used for medical evacuation, with tours on the side,  to help defray it’s cost.

History—In 1933, the Navy warned Niihau that Japan would bomb Pearl Harbor and measures should be taken to prevent Japan from using the flat lands for airfield.  It took them 8 years to trench the flat areas on the island.  One plane did successfully land there and the pilot terrorized the villagers for a short period of time until one large Hawaiian threw him against a rock wall.
