Delaware is from the name Lord De la Warr. In 1610 Captain Argyll entered the Bay and named it in honor of his superior, Lord De la Warr, who was the Provincial Governor of Virginia.
Nicknames: Diamond State, Blue Hen (because Capt. Jonathan Caldwell's Company in Colonel John Haslet's Delaware Regiment in the Revolutionary War had as mascots, fighting game cocks, chicks of the blue hen, popular in this state). State Data: Total Area - 2,372 sq. miles; water, 407 sq miles. Motto: "Liberty and Independence." State Flower: Peach Blossom. Main Rivers: Delaware, Brandywine, Christina, and Nanticoke. Mountain Ranges & Topography: Mostly lowlands, rising to small hills in the north. State is very narrow, nine miles at the narrowest and 35 miles at the widest point. Marshy and sandy shores. About 100 miles of seacoast. Principal Harbors: Wilmington, New Castle, and Lewes. Large cypress swamp in the south. Agriculture: Tomatoes, strawberries, and fruits (especially apples and peaches), cereals (corn and wheat), hay, potatoes and other vegetables. Animal husbandry, broiler chicken raising, and dairy farming. U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Newark. U.S. Land-Grant College: School of Agriculture, University of Delaware, at Newark. Fishing: Oysters, clams, sturgeon, and shad. Manufacturing includes: Chemicals and explosives, leather (tanning, currying, finishing), pulp products, railroad equipment, iron and steel products, canned fruits and vegetables, meat products, foundry and machine shop products, nylon silk, rayon, and shipbuilding. Geology: Minerals: Granite, sand, gravel, kaolin (porcelain clay) and other clay products, hornblende, and feldspar. Leading Cities: Wilmington, Dover (capital), New Castle, Seaford, Milford, and Newark.
Climate- Mild. Average annual temperature 55 degrees; extremes, 107 degrees in summer and 12 degrees below zero in winter. Annual rainfall 40 to 46 inches.

Foreign Visitors- Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus. This test does not apply to tourists. Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.
